A small galley kitchen can present some serious challenges when time for a makeover and planning decisions is very important when working in a small space where functionality is key. While there are many things you can do to make a small galley kitchen easier to use, there are some basic things that will make a significant improvement, either through major architectural changes or smaller, simpler changes. Glass cabinets will give your small galley kitchen a more open feel with a little more depth.
Avoid large patterns or tiled floors, countertops and backsplashes. Large patterns make a room look smaller. If you are putting on a hardwood floor, choose thinner planks instead of wide planks. Install your microwave on a shelf above the stove, and put additional kitchen cabinets on your refrigerator.
If you have an independent senior install an oven beneath it rather than in a separate place. Use accent lighting and task lighting instead of just using overhead lighting. Opening the kitchen to other rooms will feel bigger by creating extra space. Hang opaque window coverings that allow natural light, causing the eye to travel outside of space. If your kitchen does get a lot of natural sunlight, consider skipping window treatments together.
